The abaca plant is native to the Philippines and East Indonesia. It's closely related to and resembles the banana plant. Often referred to as Manila hemp, the fibre is extracted from the leaf sheaf that is around the trunk of the plant and can be harvested every three to eight months, making it a sustainable fibre choice. Resistant to humidity and water, abaca has a waxy appearance, is exceptionally strong and is less coarse than sisal.
