The free-floating aquatic hyacinth is termed a weed due to its rapid and aggressive growth. As a result, it chokes the water of oxygen and clogs up waterways. Instead of simply clearing and dumping the plant, locals have found ways to use it as a naturally abundant and renewable resource. Small items such as mats and baskets are among the wares commonly produced. The dried material is soft and flexible, making it easy to braid and plait.
