Raffia is the straw-like material made from segments of the leaves of a raphia palm, native to tropical regions of Africa, especially Madagascar. To create the raffia fibre, local collectors cut the palm tree’s leaves vertically and sun-dry them in strands. The green colour of the leaves turns beige. Natural raffia is pliable, strong and extremely durable, and can be dyed easily.

Inherent variations in the raffia, as well as variations resulting from the handweaving process, are to be expected and celebrated. Each item is unique and no two are alike.
